#SOL22 Summer Moments

Summer 2022- long awaited and here at last! Here are some of the highlights so far:

My birthday was June 29th. I went out to breakfast with my mom and my son Alex. I had red velvet pancakes which were delicious! We went to see Top Gun: Maverick later in the day. I hadn't been to a movie theater in AGES and I absolutely loved this movie. I thought it was the perfect sequel with so many nostalgic nods to the original. Later that night, I went to the beach with my husband, Alex and Megan. We ate outside with an ocean view and then the kids played on the sand for a while.
The next day, June 30th, my mom and sister took me out to dinner to celebrate my birthday. We went to a restaurant with a family style menu where they just bring you different appetizers, entrees and dessert. (Plus sangria!) We had a lot of laughs and talked though many topics.
July 2- July 5th, we took a family trip to Washington D.C. We traveled via Amtrak, which was such a pleasure! No summer traffic or stress trying to find a rest stop. I was able to read and relax on the journey. We stayed at the Watergate Hotel which was near the Georgetown waterfront. (We got to see the "Scandal room" inside our hotel!) One of my favorite parts of our trip was the Monument Bus Tour which took us all around D.C. and allowed us to see many Memorials and Monuments.
Saturday, July 9th- my mom and I went to a local theater to see a Broadway Concert event. 5 different Broadway singers each took turns singing songs from productions they've been in. My mom and I had such a good time. We really enjoyed the music and just being together.
This week, I am taking part in the Long Island Writing Project's Summer Institute . We are connecting our own stories to the larger U.S. story and considering ideas of identity. The group is dynamic, thoughtful, participatory and wise. I am excited for a week of connection and inspiration.
The regular moments of summer have been lovely too- watching my hydrangeas bloom, taking an afternoon nap with my cavapoo, Teddy, and having more time for reading.

You are going to find someone much inspiration at the writing workshop. I’m so many ways I think about our country’s story as each of our stories in one way or another. I hope you’ll share your learning w/ us here. All the birthday love sounds wonderful, too, and I’m longing to visit D.C. and go to some of the newer museums. Last time we were there we could see the Watergate across the river from our hotel. It would be fun to stay there and see the room!

You've been having wonderful moments this summer. The big things -- trips, meals out, shows -- are wonderful, but those small moments of playing with Teddy and watching your hydrangeas blossom are equally incredible.

I love all of these snippets of small moments, Kathleen. I've been in a bit of a slump, too, and trying to crawl my way out of it. Slicing certainly is helping. My hydrangeas are beginning to bloom, too. You made me realize how frequently I check their progress. Slow and steady, just like my writing is becoming. :-)
