It's almost 8 pm and I am finally looking at the Weekend News padlet my students worked on this morning. I see that today I missed knowing....
A got a new hamster named Oreo H got two new birds that chirp all day. L felt lonely and bored. M was in a parade. I notice many did not do this assignment and wonder why they didn't get to it. Did they feel there was nothing to share? Was the writing task too challenging for them? What news am I missing from all the children who did not share? Tomorrow, I will need to ask each child about the news shared on the padlet. I'll find out more about the hamster and birds, get the scoop on the parade, talk to L about what she can do to feel happier on the weekends. I am trying my hardest to teach my students about character traits and multiplication and electricity and all the other content on my Scope and Sequence. While they may not learn all I want them to when I want them to, at least they can feel that I care about them. And so, tomorrow I will ask the questions.

I love that you take the time to discover who your students are. Those questions about their lives show the desire to know them as people and not merely students. The collective experiences are building community! Love this.

Kathleen, I love how this assignment builds community and beckons the questions that deepen relationships. I, too, want to know more about the hamster and the birds; the sense of loneliness stirs my soul and I hope L finds it dissipating as he or she writes... and your love shines through every line. I am quite sure they feel it, too, every day. Happy catching-up and Happy Thanksgiving to you and all yours!
