I have one foot in summer and one foot in the new school year.
My summer self is not setting the alarm and choosing books to read for fun. My school self wakes up with a to-do list and schedules time to set up my classroom. My summer self plans activities for the kids, like flying on a trapeze later this week! My school self labels their supplies and puts them in their new backpacks. My summer self enjoys the feeling of unstructured days and later bedtimes. My school self worries that we need to start practicing routines again. My summer self holds my puppy Teddy while he sleeps, stroking his fur and feeling unrushed. My school self eventually puts him down to tackle the to-do list. My summer self is grateful for the chance each year to have months of time off. My school self is grateful to have the opportunity to work with children and help foster a love of learning. I have one foot in summer and one foot in the new school year.

I feel this very deeply. I am torn between both states right now. In fact, I just joked that I know longer know if my headaches/insomnia are from allergies or school stress. One foot in each world...

What a beautiful way to capture where you're standing right now, Kathleen.

You capture this so well, Kathleen. Yes! At this time of year I feel so torn. I deeply love summer, with all the freedom and joy it brings. But there's something wonder-ful about returning to our school selves, and now is the time of year where that pull reminds us how much we love what we do. And...trapeze flying? I DO hope that makes it to another blog post!
