Eleven years ago tonight, I went to bed for the last time without being a mom. My son, Alex, was born on October 6, 2010. It was a Wednesday, just like this year.
How have eleven years gone by? Eleven is electric scooters and bike riding with friends to 7-11 Eleven is more freedom Eleven is thicker books and more homework Eleven is watching movies that are too scary for me Eleven is soccer tournaments and flag football games Eleven is fishing with cousins Eleven is steakhouses and banana shakes Elven is closer to twenty than one. Happy Birthday to the bear of my heart, the one and only Alex. I couldn't love you more.

I love that you've made 11 important, as it can seem like not the biggest deal of an age. I also love the pictures that go along with this post, especially the one with Teddy. There is so much joy in both the post and the pictures.

Kathleen....Hello! I accidentally happened upon a post I wrote in the early days of the pandemic and that led to locating my blog and scrolling through a few of them. That led to looking for the TwoWritingTeachers site and once I found it that led to your post today about Alex turning 11. I've missed you...and I've missed writing lately. I've gotten kinda' lost and would like to return to writing as a centering activity. But I've forgotten how to get back onto the TWT site. Can you give me some directions?

You stopped me with the sentence "the last day of not being a mom." I hadn't really thought about, and can't remember, what that last day of not being a mom was like. I can't really imagine not being a mom as it seems I've spent most of my life - and I guess at this point I've been a mom longer than I haven't - being a mom.

Thank you for sharing! I am introducing the idea of a "Slice of Life" to my fifth grade class next week and your writing is one that I can't wait to share with my fifth grade students! Happy birthday to your son!!

Kathleen, Hooray for 11-a not usually mentioned birthday but so important in a step moving to Pre-teen years. Your son must be excited to move on up to a boy with more options. I enjoyed your take on this momentous birthday.
