Courage Doesn't Always Roar:
The Quest to Be Better Each Day

#SOL20 The Waiting

Tom Petty sang, "The waiting is the hardest part." Dr. Seuss wrote about "the waiting place" in his book Oh, The Places You'll Go. Waiting is a strange stage between your reality and your future. I find myself waiting.

We are getting a puppy in 9 days. We officially started our countdown a few days ago and today we go to single digits. 9 more days until we have a dog, a pet.....a new baby in the house again, but this time with fur. Waiting for our new dog (Teddy Graham Sokolowski) reminds me of when I was pregnant, waiting to have my children. There was so much to buy and prepare for. There were books to read. And there was all the imagining....what would it be like? How would it work? What would go wrong? What would go right? How would life change? Would I be a good mom?

We've bought many things for Teddy. We still have to put up our puppy gates. I'm worried about house training. I'm worried about separation anxiety. I'm worried about another little creating having a hold on my heart and someone else to worry about. What if he gets hurt or sick? Can my heart handle losing him? He's not even here yet.

In other areas of my life, I also feel I'm waiting.  I'm waiting for a vaccine to COVID-19.
Every day, I'm waiting for news of what my school will do. Will we stay open as we have been? Will my class need to quarantine? Will we go remote? For how long? I feel myself waiting for answers, at the mercy of others decisions.

These are the last days of my life without a dog. And so I wait.

Ah, we got our puppy late Spring and she has been a source of much amusement (even our elderly dog puts up with her antics) and love. Good luck with Teddy.
I'm hearing Petty in my head as I write this ...

Oh, the stories you will have! Next week it will be two days! It is a lot of responsibility, but I am sure Alex and Megan are ready to help! You just love a good challenge!

Kathleen, It is so cute that you are counting down the days. I'm sure the whole household is anticipating the joy. And there will be lots of joy.

I love how you tied it in to the all the additional waiting we have to do these days, and so much out of our control. Yes, to saying goodbye to the old resident and in with President Biden! So good changes are coming, while we wait. Peace in your waiting!

I think you know how much I love dogs! A new puppy is exciting, and I imagine you’ll forgive your fur baby for any accidents, and you’ll have a vet in your emergency contact list. Be sure to get the new puppy chipped. I bet you have a neighborhood like mine where lost pets often end up w/ their photos on display in the group FB page. My little Houdinis have sneaked out often to explore. It happens, but other humans who love dogs will help. Can’t wait to see photo of your new family member. Congratulations!

Congratulations! I am sure Teddy will be a source of great joy and SOL stories.

I love how you connect the joyful anticipation of Teddy's arrival to more daunting anticipations. A very effective way to conclude.

I adore a good dog - I fear I could almost be a dog hoarder. Dogs so full of love and devotion to their people - as I write this, Dennis the mini dachshund is sleeping on my lap (he may write his own post soon). Exciting and SO hard, waiting for a puppy! You're right about playing the waiting game in so many ways, Kathleen - waiting out this whole pandemic being number one on the list. Can't wait to see pictures of Teddy! Rejoicing for you and your family - and HappyThanksgiving.

Oh, I am so excited for you. It will be a lot of work and it will be the best decision you ever made. Perfect time to take this on for you and your kids. And yes ... totally agree about the waiting these days. The unknown is tough.

There better be puppy pictures in the TWT group chat after Teddy comes to live with you! I look forward to reading stories about Teddy here too!

It feels as though we're all waiting for our lives to begin again once we get vaccinated. I cannot wait since armchair traveling is getting boring.
