The Quest to Be Better Each Day

#OLW21 SOLUTIONS

I love the practice of selecting a One Little Word (OLW) to guide and inspire the year. The word I've selected for 2021 is SOLUTIONS. For me, this word is a reminder to look for ways to improve what needs fixing. In the past, I've spent time analyzing the problem, wondering why and how I've found myself in certain situations and getting lost in the emotion. SOLUTIONS is about focusing on the one thing I could do to make whatever problem I face a little easier. It's a step forward, it's taking action. It's about the present moment and how I can make it better instead of focusing on the problem itself.

Some areas of my life where I seek to work in SOLUTIONS includes my health, organization, teaching practice, parenting and time management. I have a vision for who I could be and I hope that SOLUTIONS takes me closer to becoming the best version of myself.

When a problem or obstacle arises this year, as it surely will, I hope SOLUTIONS will inspire me to think of ways around it or through it. I hope SOLUTIONS keeps me grounded in the present moment and possibilities.

My past words have been HAPPY, AUDACIOUS, TIME, DO, and PURPOSE. Each word tells a story of where I was in my life and what my priorities and focus have been. I love this practice and look forward to thinking of SOLUTIONS each day. I love Stephanie Affinito's idea to think of one little thing for your OLW each day. She wrote a great post describing it here.

What is your OLW for 2021?

Solutions can be very satisfying but hard to get to. Perseverance is key and a positive attitude.

I’m revealing my OLW in my slice this week, but my past words are resolve, hygge, and continue. Your word is closely related to my word. I too like thinking about a word as story and finding solutions for problems. Okay, I taught students to do that in their speeches for 38 years, so it’s baked into my psyche. Those who solve are the best people.

Hmm, I like it! Your word reminded me of a training I once attended called (I think Brief Solutions) as a way to coach through issues. Your positive mindset will take you far!

"Solutions" is a great word, Kathleen. I especially admire the facets of life you are already seeing through the filter of it. That's excellent advice about seeing one little thing each day for your OLW... a well-chosen word as a lens for daily life can make all the difference. My word is "awe" - I am looking for its presence each day, sometimes with actions, sometimes in the stillness of it when it comes.

I have no doubt that your OLW will let you figure out ways to achieve your intentions and overcome any challenges. Solutions is a highly positive word.

Kathleen,
Solutions is a great word. I think that will help you to hang in a little longer, push harder, fight for the right, and so much more. All the best as you find solutions in 2021.

What a great word choice! I find that so many people focus on the problems we face and often choose not to find ways to solve them.

I’ll tell ya, I always appreciate a person who comes at a problem with solutions. And the year ahead will be filled with a dearth of issues so having a solutions-based mindset will help you get through this year unscathed!

I love how you've written about the process of choosing SOLUTIONS, although I have to say, you already do a pretty amazing job of coming up with them in a lot of what I see! I'm looking forward to learning from some of your 2021 solutions!
