BOOOOOOM.
"I think your spaghetti squash just exploded," my sister said before we both collapsed into fits of laughter. There it was, sadly sunken in, strings of yellow spaghetti squash, seeds, and water dripping out of the microwave. My sister and nephew had stopped by to visit and the kids were all playing. I was starting dinner but asking advice all along the way because I'm a fairly terrible cook and my sister is a very good one. She helped me properly brown my chicken and cook my peppers and onions far better than I ever did. While we were chatting and that food was cooking, my spaghetti squash was heating in the microwave. I poked lots of holes in it before I started cooking it, but clearly not enough. The noise sounded like a person hitting the wall with lots of force. I was relieved the kids were all fine- it was the spaghetti squash who was in distress. It still tasted good after all. And the laugh made it all worth it, anyway. When is the last time you laughed so hard you cried?

Why is spaghetti squash so tricky? I mean really, I don't think I've ever cooked one to perfectly "done". It's an elusive done-ness maybe. In the eye of the beholder and all that...

To be honest, I am pretty sure, I wouldn't be brave enough to put a spaghetti squash in the microwave so good on you. I love when technology fails create humble moments.

I'm glad your squash was still edible after exploding. In my youth, I once had an eggplant explode in the oven, because I stupidly didn't know I had to poke any holes in it. There was eggplant all over the inside of the oven that needed to be scraped off and the oven then cleaned, something else I'd never done before. Many lessons learned that night.

I'm a "fairly terrible cook" too! Who knew we shared that in common? I just don't get spaghetti squash. I very recently gave it a second really good chance, and I still didn't like it. There you have it - my truth. I love the laughter and the light-hearted silliness in your piece. So fun.

Oh wow! At least it exploded and didn't cause an explosion. (Silver linings, right?) Try roasting it next time. I may have directions if you'd like. (I don't make it as often as I'd like.)
